Happy 80th Birthday Glyndebourne!

Happy 80th Birthday Glyndebourne!

Many of our summer B&B visitors stay with us because of our proximity to Glyndebourne, the magnificent opera house founded in 1934. Situated in Broad Oak, we’re just 17 miles away and therefore provide an excellent base for those wanting to relax and enjoy a night at the opera without having to ‘commute’ back to London or other more far-flung parts of the country.

This year is a very special one for Glyndebourne as it celebrates its 80th anniversary with a summer festival (May-August) that includes three new productions: Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera, Verdi’s La Traviata and revivals of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Handel’s Rinaldo. A veritable feast for the ear!

Festival audiences come from all over the UK (and world!) to experience Glyndebourne, enjoying the beautiful gardens; opportunity to dress up (tradition dictates that those attending Festival performances should wear evening dress – however, during ‘The Tour’, whether at Glyndebourne or at other venues around the country, smart/casual attire is fine); and the romance of a picnic in the grounds with champagne, strawberries and even the odd candelabra! We can help you pack the perfect hamper with goodies from our farm shop and other locally sourced East Sussex produce.

The original ethos of Glyndebourne’s founder John Christie, to do ‘Not just the best we can do but the best that can be done anywhere’, is something that we heartily subscribe to here at Longbourn. We aim to offer a warm welcome, luxury accommodation and a relaxing experience: a true home from home in the heart of the Wealden countryside… but with a little added indulgence thrown in.
